How much should a simple website design cost?

If your business is small or new, you may not want to spend a fortune creating a large, complex website. At this stage, a simple, attractive site will be enough to "test the water" and help you decide whether it's worth investing more or not. A straightforward design with Design Idea costs from around £320 plus VAT (with additional costs for content management tools and hosting).

If you're ready to invest more, you'll need to consider your "corporate look" as well as the website design. Branding is a vital aspect of your online presence and will influence the success of your site. Designing a logo and selecting corporate colours that work well together, both in print and on screen, can take a while. Your designer should spend more than a week researching ideas and testing different options with you. If you're looking for corporate styling as well as website design, you'll need to budget £1500-£2500 plus VAT.

How we can help to keep your costs down

A word of warning

You may come across some sites offering very low cost 'packages'. Be realistic when looking at these. If a freelance designer charges £30 per hour and the packages cost just £150, then you're probably only getting five hours work on your website. Not much can be achieved in five hours. Your business information may be presented in some tidy web pages - sometimes this is enough, but more often it is not. It's more likely that your site would benefit from a more developed design.

We think that the designer should spend at least five hours simply understanding your needs and researching at your competitors' sites. Remember that, ultimately, your site's 'value' rests not just in how much you spend setting it up, but on the returns you get for that initial investment.
